music_ski_cities_john You can really hear the depth of collaboration between Deb and Jon. And of course Jeremy kills it on bass. Robin is my new favourite drummer because he’s playful but appropriately playful. Also, anything coming out of StudioD in Calgary nowadays is just killer on the mix and production. Deb seriously delivers on the meaning and message of the lyrics. With all this put together, it’s a very moving album. Favorite track: Just My Little Love Song.

Front Porch 03:59
Front Porch (Deb Rasmussen) Sitting on my front porch watching flowers growing and I’m overflowing with this love for you. Sunlight beaming over meadows dreaming and I can’t help feeling all this love for you. Summer days will fade into the fall and maybe you won’t love me then at all. When winter sets the songbird on his wing then I will set my eyes upon the spring. Sitting on my front porch watching flowers growing and I’m overflowing with this love for you. Sunlight beaming over meadows dreaming and I can’t help feeling all this love for you. Love may stay or love may come and go. A summer vow may break beneath the snow. I’ll hold you in the moonlight while you’re here and let the morning sunrise dry my tears. Instrumental Summer days will fade into the fall and maybe I won’t love you then at all. When winter sets the songbird on her wing then I will set my eyes upon the spring. Sitting on my front porch watching flowers growing and I’m overflowing with this love for you. Sunlight beaming over meadows dreaming and I can’t help feeling all this love for you. I can’t feelin’ all this love for you. No, I’m overflowin’ with this love for you.

You Smile 03:30
You Smile (Simon Isenstein) You smile, and my heart starts to tango. You smile, I hear strummin’ by Django. You smile and your world is the only place I want to be. Especially when I can see that it’s because of me, That you smile. You laugh, I become Cinderella. You laugh, I hear vocals by Ella. You laugh and I’m floating on air, and I’m so trouble free. Especially when I can see that it’s because of me, That you laugh. But, if you sigh, I feel your sorrow and pain. If you cry, I can hear the despair of Coltrane. Billy and Dexter and Monk play the saddest refrain. It takes every ounce of hope just to weather the rain. You love, anything you just ask it. You love, I’m a case for a basket. You love and then low and behold I’m the luckiest me. Especially when I can see that it’s because of me, Oh, honey can’t you see that it’s because of we that I smile?

Just My Little Love Song (Deb Rasmussen) This is just my little love song to say I think that you’re so fine. And anytime, anytime that I’m around you I’m so glad that you are mine When I’m far away and lost on all those bustling sidewalks I see you face among the crowd. And lying lonely in my hotel bed at night I hear the wind call your name out loud. This is just my little love song to say I think that you’re so fine. And anytime, anytime that I’m around you I’m so glad that you are mine. Instrumental When I’m far away and lost on all those bustling sidewalks I see you face among the crowd. And lying lonely in my hotel bed at night I hear the wind call your name out loud. This is just my little love song to say I think that you’re so fine. And anytime, anytime that I’m around you I’m so glad that you are mine. So glad that you are mine. I’m so glad that you are mine. Glad that you are mine.

Unspoken 03:54
Unspoken (Deb Rasmussen) You slipped into my heart in a silent moment. A still and silent moment in the night. I didn’t see the danger in your smile. I didn’t feel the heartache for a while. And now this love unspoken rules my heart. We linger, not together, not apart. If I could only move the hands of time then maybe, darling, maybe you’d be mine. Instrumental You slipped into my heart in a silent moment. A still and silent moment in the night. I didn’t see the danger in your smile. I didn’t feel the heartache for a while. And now this love unspoken rules my heart. We linger, not together, not apart. If I could only move the hands of time then maybe, darling, maybe you’d be mine.

Swept Away 03:23
Swept Away (Deb Rasmussen) Standing in the grocery aisle she’s longing to be swept away. Between the dishes and the laundry pile She’s lost her way. Swept away. Just one more time. Swept away. A smile. A kiss. Is it wrong to miss what steals your breath away? Instrumental She’s longing to be there again standing on the shores of love. Waiting for the tide to swell and leave her swept away. Swept away. Just one more time. Swept away. A smile, a kiss. Is it wrong to miss what steals your breath away? What steals your breath away? And leaves you swept away?

Fly Away 03:21
Fly Away (Deb Rasmussen) She puts a candle in the window late at night to show the world outside everything’s alright. She puts a brave face on for all her friends to see and she fools everyone but me. Where is that smile that used to light the cloudy skies? Now all that darkness seems to fill her weary eyes. A nervous laugh can’t soothe the loneliness inside or calm the fear she tries to hide. Hang on girl, that day is coming. You will leave these cares behind and you will fly. You will be free, no chains around you. We’ll live our dreams again, together, you and I. Fly away, fly away. She puts a candle in the window late at night to show the world outside everything’s alright. She finds a strength inside where no one else can see and shares that love with you and me. Fly away. Fly away. Fly away. Fly away.

Peace, Like a River (Deb Rasmussen) Peace, like a river finds its way to the sea, come to me. Come to me. Soft as the night, as dawn’s early light. Hold me, safe in your arms, far from this crazy world’s strife and harm. And when this world is crumbling all around still I know that love abounds. I know that love abounds. Here, in my heart, we’re never apart. Love will carry me, soothe my trembling soul and set me free. Instrumental Peace, like a river finds its way to the sea, come to me. Come to me. Soft as the night, as dawn’s early light. Hold me safe in your arms. Far from this crazy world’s strife and harm. Far from this crazy world’s strife and harm.

about

UNSPOKEN is a musical and emotional journey through the parts and types of love we often leave unspoken. In the category of sweet romance, “Just My Little Love Song” and “You Smile” and were written by Deb and her life partner for each other. But between infatuation (Darn That Dream), passion (I Hear a Rhapsody) and heartbreak (It Never Entered My Mind), the stuff of many love songs, there’s longing and loneliness (Swept Away), temptation (Unspoken), the constant balancing of love versus fear (Front Porch) and the need to need to draw a line in the sand (In Your Own Sweet Way). The songs go beyond romantic love. “Fly Away” was written for all the women that have struggled to hold their families, their work and themselves together through the pandemic, digging deeper and deeper inside to find the strength to carry on. “Peace, Like a River” is a quest for inner peace, especially when the world seems to be crumbling all around. The CD resolves on “My Best to You”, a simple wish that the listener finds the love that’s good for them, whatever it may be.

UNSPOKEN began in 2019 as a fuzzy idea with a vague end date. Then COVID emerged in 2020 and Deb’s world became her house and music room. Given time and space, her song writing was reawakened. She reached out to Jon Day, who had arranged My Best to You for her in 2019, to arrange the new songs and some standards. Their remote collaboration involved Deb’s piano, a zoom mic, dropbox and email. This continued for a year and a half before they played them together for the first time and decided to record. Jeremy Coates and Robin Tufts joined them for the recording, bringing their exception skill and sensitivity to the project. The arrangement of “Darn That Dream” was a remote collaboration between Deb and Josh Nelson and “In Your Own Sweet Way” was arranged by the band in rehearsal.
